Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Which file formats are accepted by ON-PRESS Printing? A. ON-PRESS accepts almost all commercially acceptable file formats. We prefer Quark files that are supported with Illustrator and Photoshop. We also appreciate high resolution PDF files. It is important to remember that high resolution PDF files need to have high resolution images embedded in order to achieve a quality finished project. It is also important to remember that PDF files need to include a minimum of .125" of bleed in order to be considered "print ready." Try to avoid using Microsoft Publisher when preparing files for commercial print. Although it is readily available and inexpensive, it often creates difficult to solve problems when used for commercial print purposes. Finally, when possible, try to submit a physical laser print of your project with your file. Although not necessary, it is helpful for everyone if there is a physical representation of your expectations for your finished product.
Q. How should I prepare my file for commercial print? A. It is imperative when preparing files for print that you “collect for output” and include all supporting fonts and images. Also, it is very important that all images and logos are saved as CMYK. RGB is not used for commercial print. RGB images will display nicely but will print poorly in a commercial environment. Make sure that any color elements in your document are specified as the color you want them to print. Items created as a specific PMS color will not appear in a CMYK output and conversely items made up of CMYK will not appear as specific PMS colors. Color photos need to be color corrected and retouched by you. As part of preparing your files for print it is your job or the job of the person you hire. Our recommendation is to hire a professional with many past project samples to look at. If you still wish to prepare your own files, get to know your software and research how to manipulate color for the best results. Color correction, retouching and/or file manipulation after the initial phase of proofing is certain to add unexpected time and expense to your project. When preparing files that have color or image bleeding from the page, it is necessary to add a bleed to your file by extending the image off the page to compensate for trimming tolerances. Do not stop your image right on your trim line as it may leave you dissatisfied with your finish project.
Q. Can ON-PRESS prepare my files for me? A. Yes, if you have a design in your head and all of the elements at your disposal such as logos, photos and text and just want your file assembled and prepared for print, we can help. We specialize in creating rich and effective products whether they be for operational use or for marketing purposes. Just give us your ideas and we'll make them a reality.
Q. What is the best way to get my file to ON-PRESS? A. The fastest and most economical way to send us your file is via email or upload to our FTP (File Transfer Protocol) site. Files 3 MB and under after compression can be emailed without problem to annie@onpressprinting.com. Files in excess of 3 MB should be uploaded to FTP. Please contact us for an FTP password to begin your file upload. Note, you will need to have FTP software such as Fetch in order to upload to our FTP site. You can also send your file on a CD, Zip disk, Jazz Disk, or Floppy disk to our physical address. ON-PRESS accepts almost all commercially acceptable file formats.

Q. How long will my project take to complete? A. Project turn-around times can depend on many factors. Processing times can be lengthened by the number of processes needed to complete your project. Is ON-PRESS designing your project? Does your project have special features such as foil stamping, embossing, die cutting, UV coating or conversion? Lastly, how expeditiously can you review and approve your proof? Alterations to proofs will likely affect completion dates. To save time and money when submitting your own files, try to have your files preproofed for content and use your print proof as guideline for construction and color and not as an opportunity to revise wording, grammar or catch spelling errors. In short, every project is different by design and therefore, can take varied amounts of time to complete. We will always do our best to estimate a realistic completion date based on your needs and your project’s production needs.
